Molecular Biomarkers: TSE Signatures - Free Satellite Event
March 11, 2010 8:30 am - 4:00 pm Level 4 - Westin Ottawa Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Overview One of the desired outcomes of prion research is identifying and implementing innovative diagnostic tests for BSE and related conditions that can be performed on live animals and have application to human diseases.
To date, the development of live animals tests based on the detection of PrPsc have been unsuccessful and continue to be challenged by the low amounts of this disease marker in accessible tissues or body fluids. This has led to the use of a wide variety of high content screening procedures in an effort to identify alternative biomarkers of TSE disease.
The goal of this satellite event would be to bring together a group representative of the different screening technologies and examples of how they had been applied to searching for surrogate markers of TSE diseases.
Objectives and Outcomes
• Generation of a current list of putative surrogate markers • Bringing the different groups together may foster the establishment of collaborations • Sample collection is very time consuming and expensive. Few laboratories have access to the range of different samples that are a requisite part of biomarker validation. Sample exchange will speed validation • It may be unlikely that a single diagnostic tool will meet current demands for diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. Integration of complementary analyses of shared samples sets should afford greater diagnostic power. • A session focused on diagnostics may attract the industry partners needed for the commercial development of any test.
